Took the jet ski out over the 4th of July weekend in Black Creek and took about an hour ride from the 17 bridge to the South Prong of Black Creek. Looks like a decent place to fish, except for all of the boat traffic that is in this area. While riding towards South Prong, we saw a few gators resting on the shoreline and I got to thinking. What are the dangers (if any) to jacksonville kayakers and canoeist and gators? Would a gator lunge at the kayak? Is there a risk in getting attacked?

This is very uncommon. In fact, I've never actually heard of this ever happening. Most will escape to deeper water or attempt to flee.

Good to know. Ive seen a ton of gators in Guana in the past. Most recently, I've been seeing a number of gators in Black Creek too.

I've read that in extreme circumstance when a large alligator lunges at or bites your boat, hit the alligator on its snout with your paddle and quickly paddle away. Slapping the water with your paddle also helps scare them away.

I'd feel much safer in a pastic boat (kayak) than an inflatable one. I still think this is rare and unlikely to happen.

Come Sept 4th, all the gators will be at Ben Hill Griffin stadium, so it should be safe to fish those areas.

I would shoot the large alligator in his face!
